Year 1 2024 - 2025
Our teacher in Year 1 is Miss Astin and she is helped by Mrs Gladstone and Mr Peyton.
It has been an exciting start to Year 1 and we are looking forward to teaching you this next year and hope you will enjoy your time in Year 1.
Some work will be challenging, but it’s lots of fun too!
Autumn 1
This half term we have been looking at Harry The Happy Mouse. The children have really enjoyed having Harry in class with us, and tried really hard to change and develop the story to write their own!
We started the term looking at the story 'All Are Welcome'. We read the story and spoke about the importance of welcoming everyone no matter their differences. We created a poster 'Year 1 welcomes you' with pictures of our faces showing how we are all different. We hoped this would show the rest of the school that they are all welcomed into our classroom. We then moved onto looking at our families, we noticed in our class all of our families are different. We drew pictures of our families and shared them with the rest of the class as we celebrated our differences.
In Maths we have been sorting/grouping objects and counting 1 more/1 less. The children have enjoyed using practical equipment to support their learning.
In Science we have been looking at our bodies. We have drawn around our friends and labelled different parts of their bodies. We have started to look at the 5 senses and completed experiments using them.
Autumn 2
This half term we are going back in time to study The Great Fire of London. We will look at how and why the fire was significant and how our lives have changed since 1666. This will be the focus of our History lessons. In our Art lessons we will also learn how to make pop up pictures inspired by the Tudor Houses.
In Maths we will be looking at addition and subtraction within 10 and develop our confidence in using the practical equipment we were introduced to in Autumn 1. We will also learn to use the PART-PART- WHOLE model and learn number bonds to help us with our mental calculations and understanding of number.
In Science we are going to explore everyday materials. We will look at objects we use everyday in school and find out what materials they are made from and why.
As we get ready for Christmas we will be preparing for our KS1 Nativity and in RE we will look at the big question: Why is Jesus special to Christians?
